Ask about the individual
Distinguish a label someone chooses from a label an opponent assigns. Ask for the person’s own explanation and a concrete example. Do not require them to defend every argument associated with a political category.
Map the tradeoffs
Two people may share a goal and disagree about the method. They may support a common method for different reasons. Ask what each wants to protect, what costs they recognize, and what evidence would prompt reconsideration. Keep the same factual record when describing contrasting views.
